Job Summary
Associate Principal Scientist – Product Discovery and Development role at AstraZeneca focusing on Small Molecule Product Discovery and Development. Responsibilities include developing analytical methods, formulations, and drug delivery systems for small molecules; serving as a pharmaceutical-science representative on global project teams; planning and conducting experiments with minimal supervision; generating and interpreting data; presenting data to project teams and stakeholders; engaging in novel formulation development and evaluating innovative technologies; addressing issues in daily operations; providing scientific leadership across disciplines; collaborating with cross-functional teams in pharmaceutical science and CMC; presenting at internal and occasional external meetings. Required PhD (or MS with extensive industry experience) in relevant disciplines with 3+ years (or 7+ years for MS) post-graduation; strong expertise in formulation development, analytical characterization, and related technologies; hands-on experience with analytical instruments (HPLC/UPLC, LC/MS, DLS, DSC, TGA, DVS, PXRD, dissolution); ability to design and optimize formulations for poorly soluble compounds (including PROTACs & RIPTACs); clear communication and leadership skills; and capability to contribute to a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The role is based in US (Waltham, MA) with in-office presence expected at least four days a week.
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Analytical Chemistry, Material Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related disciplines with 3+ years post-graduation (5+ preferred) in pharma/biotech
- MS in related fields with 7+ years (10+ preferred) in pharma/biotech
- Advanced laboratory capability in pre-formulation, formulation development, and physical properties characterization
- Experience with analytical instruments for formulation and drug product characterization (HPLC/UPLC, LC/MS, DLS, DSC, TGA, DVS, PXRD, dissolution)
- Designing and optimizing formulations of poorly soluble compounds (including PROTACs & RIPTACs)
- Experience enabling formulation technologies (amorphous solid dispersion, lipid-based formulation, nanoparticles)
- Proven track record of scientific publications, patents, and/or conference presentations
- Ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to broad audiences
- Risk-based decision making and problem solving
- Ability to work across cross-functional teams (chemists, biologists, formulators, analytical scientists)
- Willingness to work in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment
