Associate Principal Engineer

Job Summary
Provide design and engineering guidance across HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and related mechanical systems while ensuring DSI engineering standards are consistently upheld. Own conceptual design direction for assigned projects, review complex preliminary redline layouts, and perform or validate advanced engineering calculations including heating/cooling loads and equipment sizing. Conduct site inspections to confirm compliance with construction documents and resolve design issues, representing engineering as the technical subject-matter expert in client and project team meetings. Manage a small group of engineers, overseeing their staffing, training, coaching, and performance. Stay current on industry trends, codes, and best practices to share knowledge across the team.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
- 12+ years of relevant engineering experience
- at least 5 years of people management experience
- Expert-level knowledge of applicable systems design (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, etc.)
- broader design engineering practice
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- ability to engage effectively with staff, clients, and general contractors at all levels
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop an engineering team
- Strong public speaking and presentation ability
- Strong computer skills, including CAD/BIM tools and Microsoft Office (including Excel)
Desired Qualifications
- Experience across multiple mechanical disciplines (HVAC, plumbing, fire protection)
- Design-build or mechanical contractor leadership experience
- Track record of developing engineers into senior/lead roles
