Associate General Counsel

Job Summary

Conduct legal counsel and support on corporate, transactional, compliance, and governance matters for URI, including advising on procurement, finance, real estate, labor relations, and grant compliance. Develop policies and procedures to manage organizational risk and supervise outside counsel and paralegals on a project basis. Collaborate with Governmental Affairs, Security, and Facilities to address legislation, law enforcement visits, and critical incidents affecting clients and staff. Prepare regulatory training, draft Board resolutions, and integrate priorities for multiple internal clients while maintaining confidentiality. Participate in senior leadership meetings and perform General Counsel duties as requested based on organizational needs.

Required Qualifications

  • Admission to the New York State Bar
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in the practice of law
  • Experience in the practice of law having a combination of law firm and in-house experience
  • Experience preferably in government or a nonprofit
  • Experience in one or more of the following: Laws and regulations applicable to non-profit entities and tax-exempt organizations
  • Experience in one or more of the following: Drafting and negotiating a wide variety of contracts
  • Experience in one or more of the following: Compliance, risk management, and development of policies and procedures
  • Experience in one or more of the following: Experience analyzing, interpreting, and clearly communicating legal strategies and requirements to/for non-lawyer colleagues
  • Ability to integrate and balance priorities for the benefit of multiple internal clients
  • Outstanding attention to detail and commitment to excellence in work product
  • Strong legal, analytical, problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise strong judgment and discretion
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Office 365 or similar suites
  • Based in midtown New York office
  • Hybrid work arrangement with at least 3 days per week in office expected weekly
  • Will be required to read printed and handwritten materials
  • Will be required to use computer mouse and keyboard
  • Will be required to read information on computer screen
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to enter information in digital forms and spreadsheets
