Job Summary
In-house legal leadership role for Hawaiian Electric Companies on complex corporate and commercial transactions, supervising outside counsel and providing comprehensive legal services across multiple practice areas (including federal contracts, regulatory matters, real property, IP, privacy, and labor/employment). Develop policies, train operational teams, advise senior management on legal risks, and help shape strategic direction. Roles available at Associate General Counsel or Senior Associate General Counsel level, with the position prioritized for substantial transactional experience, strong communication, and the ability to operate with minimal supervision. Location based in Honolulu, Oahu; role emphasizes risk assessment, client-facing collaboration, and alignment with the company’s core values.
Required Qualifications
- Law degree, membership in the Hawaii State Bar Association and license to practice law in Hawaii
- Minimum of 4 years of legal experience for Associate General Counsel
- Minimum of 7 years of legal experience with minimum of 3 years in one or more specialized practice areas for Senior Associate General Counsel
- Thorough knowledge in commercial and business law (contract focus)
- Experience with complex commercial transactions and corporate liabilities
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
- Strong communication and presentation skills
- Demonstrated leadership and ability to guide teams
- Ability to identify legal options and provide creative solutions
- Experience with outside counsel management and budgeting
- Ability to mentor and train others
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
