Job Summary
Associate at Engine Ventures focused on deep-tech investing: perform due diligence (scientific, technical, and commercial) and compose investment memorandums; develop a broad network of researchers and entrepreneurs to identify opportunities; discuss, evaluate, and present opportunities in weekly investment team meetings; work with Partners to structure investments in deep tech; support portfolio companies post-investment on growth, strategic priorities, business models, and follow-on capital; represent Engine Ventures and Tough Tech within startup and academic ecosystems; take on new responsibilities and special projects as needed. Requires advanced technical training (PhD or equivalent) across relevant engineering/tech disciplines, 2-5+ years of experience in demanding settings, ability to assess complex systems, strong commercial intuition, collaboration, exceptional communication, and high ownership in ambiguous environments.
Required Qualifications
- PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant field (electrical engineering, chemical engineering, computer science, physics, materials science, mechanical engineering, or related disciplines)
- 2-5+ years of experience in a demanding environment (e.g., deep tech startup, product or strategy role, or top-tier consulting)
- Demonstrated ability to understand and evaluate complex technical systems across domains
- Strong commercial intuition and interest in how technologies scale into large businesses
- Collaborative mindset and strong interpersonal judgment; ability to build trust with founders and teammates
- Clear, structured thinking and exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- High degree of ownership, with the ability to operate independently and drive work forward in ambiguous environments
