Job Summary

Associate Director for Global Studies at NYPL leading the Global Studies curators, overseeing international materials collection development, and shaping strategy across NYPL’s research libraries. Responsibilities include directing international collection development for materials outside the U.S. and diaspora communities; teaching the strategic importance of international collecting; collaborating with ReCAP, MaRLI, and partner libraries; managing budget and vendor relationships; fostering collaboration with education, public service, programming, exhibitions, and special collections; representing NYPL in consortia and conferences; and developing staff, partnerships, and processes to advance global studies collections and services. Travel to NYPL sites as needed. The role requires strong leadership, languages knowledge, donor relations experience, and a track record of building consensus and driving initiatives across multiple stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science or an advanced degree and relevant and substantial research library experience
  • 10+ years of professional and relevant library experience in area studies collection development
  • 7+ years supervisory experience
  • Experience in budget management
  • Experience in donor relations and stewardship
  • Demonstrated expertise with collection development practices, especially for non-English language materials, in an academic or research library setting
  • Reading and writing knowledge of additional languages relevant to the library’s holdings
  • Strong leadership skills, including negotiation and influencing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus, resolve complex problems and promote productive teamwork
  • Significant problem-solving, decision-making, analytical and creative thinking abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Successfully demonstrated commitment to excellence in public service
  • Capacity to thrive in a collaborative and dynamic environment
