Associate Director - Fire Engineering

Job Summary
Lead and manage the fire engineering team on Defence projects, delivering large, complex assignments in a multi-disciplinary design consultancy. Responsibilities include overseeing project delivery to regulatory requirements and client expectations, setting and monitoring SMART goals, conducting staff appraisals, developing professional development plans, mentoring staff toward Chartership, providing specialised technical input across the portfolio, and leading client relationships to attract new work. Ensure project budgets and schedules are met, maintain quality, and uphold Health & Safety policies. Requires extensive knowledge of UK standards (BS 9991/9999/BB100, ADB) and Defence standards (JSP 80, DIFS), proficiency with fire engineering tools (FDS, SFE, evacuation modelling), and relevant professional memberships or certifications (MIFireE, NFPA CFPE). Degree in fire science/engineering (BEng/MEng or MSc); Chartered Engineer status and security clearance are highly regarded. Hybrid working options available; base in the UK (Edinburgh) with UK-wide responsibilities.
Required Qualifications
- Extensive experience in a large, multi-disciplinary environment
- Comprehensive knowledge of UK standards and guidance documents (including ADB, BS 9991, BS 9999, BS 9992, HTM 05-02, BB100)
- Comprehensive knowledge of Defence standards (JSP 80, DIFS)
- Proficiency with fire engineering tools (FDS, SFE, evacuation modelling software)
- Membership in professional institutions (MIFireE) and/or NFPA CFPE certification
- BEng/MEng or MSc in fire science/engineering or related field
- UK national status (preferred)
- Security clearance good level (preferred)
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) with IFE or related
- PhD in fire-related discipline (preferred)
- International standards experience (IBC, SFPE, NFPA) (preferred)
