Job Summary
Associate Curator, Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Plan, build, and present post-2000 works for the AGO Collection; create and organize major exhibitions often in partnership with peer museums; produce a notable exhibition cycle roughly every three years; interpret works of art and foster public understanding. Collaborate with colleagues to support AGO’s mission, participate in ongoing department operations, and contribute to strategic goals. Responsible for coordinating collection installations and rotations, liaising with lenders and external stakeholders, supervising research assistants and interns, and ensuring proper care of artworks. Leads exhibitions and related publications, coordinates exhibitions with internal departments, negotiates acquisitions, prepares documentation for review boards, and supports committee work. Requires advanced knowledge in contemporary art, strong research and writing abilities, cross-departmental collaboration, and demonstrated curatorial management experience. Eligible candidate will have graduate-level education in art history and at least five years of curatorial experience, with proficiency in collections management software (e.g., TMS) and fluency in English (French a plus). Must be able to contribute to AGO’s donor programs, public programming, and international art activities while upholding values of respect, openness, collaboration, and accountability.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum MA in Art History or similar discipline
- Minimum of 5 years of experience organizing major exhibitions and developing collections
- Minimum of 5 years of direct curatorial experience in a museum (AGO or comparable)
- Demonstrated ability to plan and execute exhibitions and publications
- Strong research and writing skills including scholarly publication history
- Experience with cross-departmental collaboration and teaching/mentoring staff or interns
- Experience with collections management software such as The Museum System (TMS)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; knowledge of French or other languages an asset
- Experience with donor relations and public programming
- Ability to manage budgets and supervise staff
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work with diverse audiences and stakeholders
- Confidentiality and diplomacy in handling sensitive information
- Ability to travel for domestic/international trips as part of AGO International Art Circle
- Experience in working with lenders and external partners
- Knowledge of Indigenous and Canadian art within a global context
