Job Summary
Associate Chemist will supervise, hire, train, and evaluate laboratory staff; analyze, coordinate, supervise, and manage daily laboratory operations during outbreak events; plan, prepare, and supervise laboratory services to regulatory standards; prioritize and monitor work to optimize service; ensure regulatory and safety standards and assist with accreditation; manage inventory purchases; supervise the unit’s activities with the Unit Chief/Director; participate in cross-training for surge events; help modify procedures; perform high and moderate complexity laboratory testing on clinical and environmental specimens submitted to the PHL; generate and release reports; maintain quality control/assurance programs and enact corrective actions as needed. The role is within the Water Chemistry Unit at NYC’s Public Health Laboratory, focusing on testing drinking water quality parameters (anions, TDS, turbidity, alkalinity, conductivity) and supporting public health objectives, with potential work-from-home days depending on position and policy. Commitment to equity and public health service is emphasized.
Required Qualifications
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by 16 semester credits in chemistry and 8 semester credits in any one or a combination of the following areas: chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, environmental science, forensic science, or other natural science.
- Must possess a valid License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist issued by the New York State Education Department at time of appointment and maintain for duration of employment.
- At least two years of full-time satisfactory experience performing chemical or physical analyses in a laboratory for Assignment Level II and above (with substitution options for education).
