Job Summary
Associate – Police Law role based in Manchester with a focus on defending civil actions brought against police forces and public authorities. Manages own fast-track and multi-track caseload, handling catastrophic injury and large loss claims, including liabilities, while supporting senior lawyers on complex matters. Responsibility to develop case strategies, draft pleadings and witness statements, prepare instructions for counsel and experts, attend conferences, trials, and ADR proceedings, and contribute to client relationship development and business/networking activities. The role involves work across claims against police forces, insurers, and corporate clients, and may include group litigation and matters arising from significant public inquiries. Hybrid work arrangement with two days per week in the Manchester office and three days working from home. Essential skills include experience in defendant practice (police/public authorities or large loss teams), strong attention to detail, ability to prioritise, professional communication, and strong academic background.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience managing a caseload of claims involving police/public authorities and/or large loss EL/PL matters, including liability assessment
- Experience within a defendant practice, ideally in police law, public authority, or large loss teams
- Strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy
- Ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Professional and confident communicator, able to build strong internal and external relationships
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong academic background
