Assistant Resident Engineer – Structures/Bridge (Island Infrastructure Project)

Job Summary
Supervise and manage construction activities for bridges and structural works on the island project, ensuring execution aligns with approved drawings, specifications, and codes. Lead and coordinate structural inspections across foundations, substructures, superstructures, bearings, and deck elements while reviewing contractor method statements, shop drawings, and inspection test plans. Monitor construction quality for reinforcement placement, concrete pouring, pre/post-tensioning, and structural steel erection, and coordinate witness material and structural tests including concrete compressive strength and weld inspections. Manage non-conformance reports, site instructions, and technical queries, and provide guidance to site engineers and survey teams on setting out and alignment. Participate in safety audits, risk assessments, and toolbox talks for high-risk activities such as lifting operations and work at heights. Support partial and final handover inspections, including snagging and verification of as-built documentation.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering
- Solid 12-15 years in construction supervision of bridges and major structural works
- Experience as Assistant Resident Engineer (ARE) or Senior Engineer
- Strong knowledge of bridge engineering principles, including structural analysis concepts, load paths, durability, and detailing requirements
- Practical experience with different bridge forms such as reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel or composite bridges, culverts, and associated structural systems
- Good understanding of relevant design and construction codes and standards (e.g., AASHTO, Eurocodes, BS codes, or local bridge/structural standards)
- Effective communication skills to liaise with contractors, design consultants, client representatives, and internal project team members
- Proven ability to lead and manage site teams, including inspectors and junior engineers, in a high-pressure project environment
- Commitment to health, safety, and environmental compliance, particularly in a remote island and coastal setting
- Proficiency in MS Office
- Familiarity with basic project management and document control tools
Desired Qualifications
- Experience on island, coastal, or marine bridge projects (e.g., causeway bridges, jetty access bridges, boardwalk structures)
- Familiarity with foundations in challenging ground conditions (e.g., piles in marine environment, rock socketed piles, caissons, ground improvement)
- Exposure to advanced construction techniques (e.g., segmental bridges, launching girders, incremental launching, heavy lifting operations)
- Experience using structural or bridge-related software for review and coordination (e.g., basic familiarity with STAAD, SAP, or similar tools)
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to propose practical site solutions that respect design intent and safety requirements
- Flexibility and adaptability to live and work on an island project site, including willingness to work extended hours as project demands require
