Assistant Research Scientist

Job Summary

Manage the daily operation and organization of the research laboratory, including the trace metal clean room, and oversee inventory, supplies, and safety compliance. Train laboratory personnel in safety procedures and analytical methods, while mentoring students and providing technical support for research activities. Lead or assist with oceanographic field expeditions, preparing equipment for campaigns and conducting trace metal analyses using wet chemistry and ICP-MS techniques. Collect, process, and manage research samples following quality-control procedures, then analyze, interpret, and report data to prepare figures and references for manuscripts and grant proposals. This role requires 1-12 weeks of business travel annually and may involve work beyond normal office hours or on weekends.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Oceanography, Earth Science, or a related field
  • Relevant professional experience with making geochemical analyses
  • Relevant professional experience with taking shipboard sample collections at sea
  • Ability to work outdoors exposed to various weather conditions, potential allergens, elevated noise levels, and heat/cold
  • Ability to move heavy objects with assistance
  • Ability to drive a vehicle
  • Ability to travel independently to other and/or remote locations for 1-12 weeks at a time by driving and/or flying on commercial airlines
  • Experience working in trace metal clean rooms
  • Knowledge of analyzing samples by plasma mass spectrometry
  • Experience with trace metal, isotope, and speciation analyses
  • Experience with oceanographic field sampling and laboratory instrumentation
  • Experience mentoring students or research personnel
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and scientific writing skills
  • Advanced problem-solving skills
