Job Summary
Analyze official workout and past performance records to arrange races between horses of equal experience and ability. Handicap horses by assigning weights based on data such as age, sex, total winnings, and distances won. Confers with track management to plan race types and determine purses. Reviews applications for competition entry, accepts fees from owners, and registers persons with financial interests in horses. Registers names of persons having financial interest in horse. Reviews racing information for newspapers, racing forms, and daily programs. Directs workers compiling racing information and assigning stable space. Records official racing results and ownership changes. Observes races to study horse ability and verify entries and handicaps. Accepts entries and checks eligibility. Requires a Master's degree or equivalent experience and New Mexico Racing Commission licensing.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree (M. A.) or equivalent
- four to ten years related experience and/or training
- equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
- Must qualify for licensing with the New Mexico Racing Commission
- Must be able to regularly stand
- Must be able to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls
- Must be able to frequently reach with hands and arms
- Must have close vision
- Must have color vision
- Must have peripheral vision
- Must be able to regularly lift, push, pull and/or move up to 75 pounds
- Must be able to push, pull, reach, bend, twist, stoop, stack, crouch, kneel and balance when performing job duties in varying work areas such as confined spaces
