Assistant Public Defender

Provide competent legal representation to indigent or incarcerated criminal defendants at all stages of prosecution in Clarion County. Responsibilities include investigating cases, interviewing witnesses, conducting research for pre-trial hearings and trials; preparing and delivering arguments in front of Magisterial District Judges and in Court of Common Pleas; counseling clients; filing motions and briefs; visiting clients in mental hospitals, jails, and state facilities; representing clients at pre-trial hearings, trials, sentencing, and post-conviction hearings; preparing post-trial motions and appeals; conducting legal research; negotiating plea bargains with the District Attorney; drafting correspondence and reports; coordinating with internal departments and external agencies; and traveling as necessary. Required qualifications include a Juris Doctorate, admission to the Pennsylvania Bar, and relevant legal competencies such as English proficiency, strong communication, independence, confidentiality, and the ability to travel. Must obtain and maintain applicable clearances (Act 34, Act 151, FBI) and hold a valid Pennsylvania driver's license. The role emphasizes advocacy within public defense and adherence to constitutional and procedural standards across multiple courts and proceedings.
