Job Summary
Greet customers, answer inquiries, and explain store policies. Assist with hiring, firing, discipline, promotion, and evaluation of Produce Department personnel. Orient and train new employees, retrain staff as needed, and maintain the Communication Board with updated materials and sampling program guidelines. Implement weekly display plans, ensuring full, color-contrasted, and rotated displays with seasonal tables and adequate space for impulse items. Supervise ordering from vendors to minimize out-of-stocks, prepare the backroom for receipt, check loads for quality, code-date cases, sort by ripeness, and verify merchandise against invoices. Clean department floors, mirrors, bins, equipment, and scales safely. Operate pallet jacks, forklifts, balers, and other equipment while adhering to safety procedures. Count and record inventory, compute retail prices, manage PLU files, and label merchandise. Move damaged products to the backroom for credit or markdown. Check cooler temperatures four times daily. Perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by the store manager and substitute for absent workers.
Required Qualifications
- Basic mathematical ability (add, subtract, multiply, divide) and ability to count.
- Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/employees concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment.
- A stable work and educational history.
- The ability to read and write English. Demonstrate basic communication ability; able to comprehend instructions, merchandise labels, order codes, numbers, reports, printed paper invoices and order forms.
- Make judgments concerning: the placement of merchandise on the shelf/display, pricing, employee scheduling, order of product/supplies, hiring/supervision of employees, merchandising plans, departments operational policies and procedures and the sales/promotion of merchandise.
- Good interpersonal communications.
- Must be 18 years or older to operate the pallet jack, forklift and baler.
Desired Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior Produce Department experience.
- Prior supervisory experience.
