Job Summary

Assist principal in the overall administration and instructional supervision of Harrisonburg High School. Effectively assists the principal in developing, revising, and evaluating the instructional curriculum and division-wide instructional programming, and in coordinating budgeting, record-keeping, and day-to-day building administration. Analyzes data to identify student needs, guides changes in instruction, and evaluates programs and decisions. Supports the principal with the school improvement process and with leading the school community through that process. Supervises and evaluates instructional staff, assists with maintaining a positive school climate and safe environment, coordinates the in-school gifted program and the summer school program, and collaborates with staff and parents to support student growth and welfare. Maintains professional relationships with staff, parents, and students and represents the school at community and civic events.

Required Qualifications

  • Virginia Postgraduate Professional license with High School Principal or Administration and Supervision PreK-12 endorsement
  • Minimum of five years of successful high, middle, or elementary school teaching experience
  • Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Experience working with diverse learning needs and with children that may benefit from alternative learning models
  • Familiarity with racial equity and inclusion frameworks
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences, specifically racially, ethnically, and socioeconomically diverse communities to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to flex communication style to multiple cultural environments to improve instructional practices
  • Proficiency in the use of a variety of office equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, email, and information system applications
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community
  • Proficiency in business English: spelling, grammar, and spoken language
  • Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive to people and their concerns. Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, administration, co-workers, and the community
  • Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment
  • Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions
  • Maintains confidentiality in all matters
  • Models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions, including non-discriminatory and cultural inclusion practices by respecting the worth, dignity and individual beliefs of others
  • Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations and procedures
