Job Summary

Lead the design and deployment of AI-powered software that supports user operations, automates data acquisition and analysis, and enables closed-loop, autonomous experiments across X-ray Imaging Group beamlines. Design and implement AI/ML tools for imaging operations (reconstruction, super-resolution, spatiotemporal fusion, denoising, segmentation, feature extraction) and integrate them into the beamline software stack. Build automated pipelines for acquisition, quality control, and downstream analysis; develop robust metadata capture and standardized datasets for continual model training and validation. Develop and maintain on-site support for user operations, contribute to remote/AI-driven operation initiatives, and advance autonomous experimentation, including the fully autonomous, AI-driven tomography beamline. Collaborate with the APS Computation and AI group and other facility-wide AI efforts to align tools with infrastructure, data services, and computing resources. Present results via publications and conferences; may perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in computer science, electrical engineering, computational physics, computational materials science, applied mathematics, or closely related field
  • Demonstrated expertise in AI/ML applied to imaging or scientific data
  • Hands-on experience developing and deploying deep-learning models (e.g., CNNs, vision transformers, diffusion models)
  • Strong scientific software development skills in Python and modern deep-learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow)
  • Experience with distributed training on high-performance computing resources
  • Experience with high-performance computing (HPC) and/or cloud environments
  • Experience with version control (e.g., Git) and collaborative software development practices
  • Experience working with experimental imaging data (e.g., synchrotron, electron microscopy, medical imaging)
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative, team-based environment
  • Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork
  • Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels
