Job Summary
Direct and supervise ILWU Longshore personnel for vessel, yard, gate, and rail operations, analyzing needs to assign labor that maximizes efficiency while maintaining safety. Counsel, discipline, and train employees; enforce productivity levels through frequent rounds and shift-end assessments. Adjust grievances via the Labor Relations Committee and arbitration as necessary. Plan department operations, determine workforce hiring, and document daily safety meetings to identify and resolve hazards. Manage terminal operating systems, complete related reports, and ensure customer service requests comply with instructions. Collaborate across departments to optimize cargo movement and minimize costs within budgeted guidelines.
Required Qualifications
- BA/BS degree in Business Management, Marine Administration, Transportation, Engineering or equivalent experience working in management
- Ability to work any combination of 24/7 shift work, including weekends and holidays
- Ability to operate vehicles for facility projects
- Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to respond to accidents or incidents at any time of the day or night
- Ability to use a computer and keyboard
- Ability to work in hot and cold climates based on weather conditions
- Ability to sit and work at desk and computer for extended periods of time
- Position is based in Long Beach, CA; work assignments may require travel to other marine terminal sites or travel to other locations
Desired Qualifications
- Solid understanding and familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point and Visio) and the Terminal Operating System and other related applications
