Job Summary

Assistant News Editor focused on commissioning and editing the best stories from a US-based team for The Telegraph. You will coordinate coverage across the United States, support the bureau chief and associate news editor in Washington, and occasionally cover breaking news. Responsibilities include generating ideas, commissioning and editing across a rotating schedule, liaising with correspondents, working with desk editors on breaking news and long-term events, planning for major forthcoming news events, running liveblogs, and developing areas of specialism. Key skills include newsroom editing experience, strong news judgment, deadline-driven work, clear and concise writing aligned with house style, social media proficiency, digital storytelling techniques, and an independent, creative approach to commissioning and developing stories; proficiency in a second language is desirable.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience of news editing in a national or international newsroom
  • Strong news sense, with the ability to seek out exclusives and breaking stories
  • Experience of planning coverage of future news events and preparing diary items of news
  • Experience of working to tight daily deadlines
  • Strong ability to write and edit articles clearly, concisely and to house style
  • Have a good working understanding of social media channels to both spot and promote stories
  • Be familiar with and have experience of digital storytelling techniques, and how to promote content off platform
  • Proficiency in a second language is desirable, but not essential
  • Creativity and independence in commissioning and developing stories
  • Familiarity with headline writing and techniques to help sell stories on various platforms
