Assistant Manager, Production Greenhouse

Job Summary
Propagate, nurture, and grow a variety of plants, flowers, vegetables, trees, and epiphytic species for seasonal and permanent landscape displays. Move, transplant, prune, and water plants, cuttings, and seedlings while maintaining fertilization schedules and applying pest control for insects, disease, or weeds. Supervise two Greenhouse Technicians and volunteers by planning tasks, organizing general care, and providing training on sound horticultural practices. Source plants from existing vendors and identify new vendors for consideration. Clean and maintain tools and equipment, employing proper sanitation measures, and conduct in-house workshops to share horticultural topics. Work weekends and holidays on a rotational basis within approved budget limitations while adhering to safety procedures and policies.
Required Qualifications
- Valid driver's license and good driving record
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
- Written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
- Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English as it relates to the duties and safety requirements of the position
- Close vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus
- Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
- Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
- Ability to regularly use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms
- Ability to frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch
- Ability to talk and hear
- Ability to work in environments that are wet, humid, extremely hot or cold
- Ability to work with exposure to insects, snakes and/or rodents
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in horticulture or related degree preferred
- 2 years related experience and/or training preferred in botanical garden, greenhouse or nursery
- Working knowledge of annuals, perennials, and woody plants
- Ability to operate various landscape equipment
- Must be a team player able to work comfortably and effectively in cross-functional teams
- Ability to work with diverse groups of individuals and take direction
- Basic computer skills, Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, Powerpoint
