Job Summary
Counsel departments, schools, and officials on state and federal education law, special education, labor, and municipal issues. Represent the School District in federal and state courts, administrative proceedings, arbitrations, and mediations. Draft, research, and submit legal documents and briefs while supervising junior attorneys as assigned. Evaluate special education, residency, and student discipline matters; prepare allegations for suspension hearings. Attend Board and committee meetings to provide legal assistance and interpret policies. Train administrators and teachers on legal implications of education and student discipline. Handle arbitration practice, negotiate contracts, and perform legal work for real property transactions and collective bargaining.
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from a Law School of recognized standing
- Three years of full-time experience as a practicing attorney
- Experience with oral and written arbitration
- Experience with legal defense work
- Experience with legal research
- Experience with legal writing
- Admission to the New York State Bar
- Proof of good standing in the New York State Bar
- Admission to the bar of the United States District Court
- Fulfillment of biannual New York State continuing legal education requirement
- Participation in a police background record check
- Participation in the DCJS fingerprinting process
