Job Summary
Assistant Director, Strategic Meetings leads end-to-end planning and execution of AGU's strategic and specialty meetings, coordinating across the enterprise, guiding meeting formats and delivery models, managing budgets and vendor relationships, overseeing onsite and remote delivery, and driving continuous improvement through data and collaboration. Responsibilities include cross-portfolio planning, resource management, risk and safety considerations, contract negotiation, post-event debriefs, and scalable, innovative meeting strategies. Requires 5+ years in event design/development, strategic thinking, partnership development, strong communication, leadership in a matrix environment, and ability to travel up to 20% of the time. This remote, full-time role is based in the United States with eligibility to live in many states (excluding WA, OR, CA).
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in event design and development
- Management experience in a membership organization
- Experience implementing new strategies and programs
- Experience developing and managing budgets
- Strategic thinking and ability to translate vision into executable plans
- Strategic planning and business development knowledge
- Experience in partnership development and management
- Effective written, verbal, and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated application of creative approaches to strategic enhancements, innovation and continuous improvement
- Professional interpersonal and relationship-building skills
- Attention to detail with ability to multitask under deadlines
- Computer skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams
- Ability to exercise discretion on confidential matters
- Ability to identify emerging trends in scientific conferences and events
- Background in creating strategic partnerships and collaborations
- Ability to travel 20% of the time
