Assistant Curator of Fish, Invertebrates and Jellies

Job Summary
The Assistant Curator oversees care of jelly, tropical fish, and invertebrate exhibits, manages life-support systems, and supervises aquarists. Works closely with veterinarians and other departments to ensure animal welfare, exhibit maintenance, and compliance with animal welfare standards and AZA accreditation. Responsible for tank stocking, jelly culture lab output, and coordinating animal collection and husbandry across taxa. Leads a team through scheduling, performance assessments, and supplies ordering; mentors staff and supports training and enrichment programs. Involves field collection from Long Island Sound and travel as needed; requires strong English communication and the ability to lift 60 pounds and work weekends/holidays. Requires four-year degree in a related field, five years of AZA-accredited zoo/aquarium experience with jellies/corals/fish/invertebrates, advanced life-support and water quality knowledge, a valid driver’s license, and SCUBA certification (preferred). The role emphasizes collaboration with the veterinary team and participation in institutional welfare initiatives.
Required Qualifications
- Four-year degree (B.S. or B.A.) in marine biology, biology, zoology, psychology or related field (or related experience)
- Five years paid experience in an AZA accredited zoo, aquarium or equivalent with jellies, corals, fish and invertebrates
- Advanced knowledge of jelly and coral care and cultivation
- Advanced knowledge of the operation and maintenance of aquarium and life support systems, laboratory equipment and water quality testing
- Valid license with a clean driving record
- SCUBA certification and collection experience preferred
