Job Summary
Two Assistant Commissioners with the NYC Department of Design and Construction will manage large-scale capital construction programs for NYC's Division of Public Buildings. Responsibilities include overseeing ~80 active projects totaling ~$1B, directing ~40 professional staff across program directions and project management, ensuring on-time and on-budget performance, guiding design through closeout, monitoring consultants and contractors, addressing procurement and design issues, and participating in agency task forces. Requires civil-service eligibility or open/promo lists, U.S. work authorization, and credentials from a DOE-recognized U.S. institution; no visa sponsorship offered. Office location: New York City, with in-person work expectations.
Required Qualifications
- Two Assistant Commissioners will oversee an annual capital construction program comprised of approximately 80 active projects valued at approximately $1 billion.
- Manage approximately 40 professional staff (program directors, deputy program directors, project managers, technical staff, administrative staff, and construction management staff).
- Projects range from initiation through scope development, design, construction, and closeout phases.
- Ensure projects stay on schedule and costs are controlled/budgeted; monitor and evaluate performance of staff, consultants, and contractors; address deficiencies expeditiously.
- Participate in agency task forces and monitor compliance with capital commitment plan goals; develop procedures for project planning and management; provide status reports; attend high-level meetings with sponsor agencies and DDC senior management.
- Educational credentials must be from a U.S. Department of Education-recognized accredited institution; foreign credentials require evaluation.
- Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
- Candidates must be currently authorized to work full-time in the United States; permanent civil service eligibility (in title) or eligibility on promotional/open competitive lists (exam numbers provided) is required.
