Job Summary

Open-rank tenure-track/tenured faculty position in Systems and Synthetic Biology within the UW–Madison Department of Bacteriology. The hire will support ongoing teaching needs and may develop new courses in quantitative microbiology, systems & synthetic microbiology, and/or microbiome engineering. The successful candidate will lead innovative research programs aimed at predictive modeling and engineering of biological networks, contribute to graduate and undergraduate teaching, mentor graduate students, participate in departmental and university governance, and collaborate across departments, schools, and colleges. The department emphasizes quantitative and interdisciplinary approaches, including experimental, computational, and engineering perspectives, to connect molecular mechanisms to cellular and higher-order function across scales. Current research areas include microbial metabolism, molecular regulation mechanisms, natural products chemistry, computational microbiology, and the bioeconomy, within a supportive environment and robust infrastructure for synthetic biology. Teaching loads and responsibilities include delivering courses and updating curricula to educate a diverse student body, with potential involvement in graduate and undergraduate instruction and program development. Required Qualifications

  • Strong academic record with a vision for an innovative and impactful research program
  • Ability to mentor graduate students and supervise research
  • Commitment to high quality and inclusive undergraduate and graduate instruction and mentoring
  • Experience or potential to secure extramural funding and direct a well-recognized research program
  • Ability to teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses and contribute to curriculum updates and innovations
  • Willingness to participate in departmental and university faculty governance
  • PhD in microbiology, synthetic biology, biological computation, or related field (preferred by start date)
  • Qualifications sufficient for tenure at Associate Professor or Professor level in the relevant department
  • Experience or expertise aligning with Systems and Synthetic Biology and interdisciplinary collaboration
