Job Summary
Interpret spoken instruction, discussions, and school activities into ASL for students across elementary, middle, and high school settings. Translate student responses from ASL into spoken English for teachers and peers during classroom lessons, assemblies, school events, and meetings. Review lesson plans and textbooks in advance to ensure accurate interpretation, modifying techniques based on individual student communication levels. Assist with Individualized Education Program (IEP) implementation and attend IEP meetings to support academic understanding, vocabulary development, and social interaction. Maintain strict confidentiality and ethical standards while promoting an inclusive learning environment for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Full-time role with consistent caseload, no weekends or holidays, and summers off.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree or completion of a sign language interpreter training program
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English
- Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA score ~3.2–3.5 or higher)
- Must be available for school-based settings in Charleston, SC
- Must be available for classroom-based work
- Must be available for extracurricular activities
- Must be available for assemblies and school events
- Must be available for meetings and conferences
- Must be available for IEP meetings
- Must be able to interpret spoken instruction, discussions, and school activities into ASL
