Job Summary
Arts & Design Studio Technician needed to support arts and design laboratories and ceramics studios. Responsibilities include operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting studio facilities and equipment (kilns, pug mills, slip casting systems, and related machinery), coordinating firing operations (electric, gas, Raku, test, and pit firing), maintaining materials (clay bodies, glazes, slips, test tiles), enforcing OSHA standards and safety practices, managing inventory and budgets, procurement, and supporting instructional activities by assisting faculty with demonstrations and lab setup. The role also involves training and supervising work-study students, coordinating studio operations across campuses, and providing technical support for related software and integrated lab technologies. Requires high school diploma or GED, at least 1 year of ceramics/studio experience, and relevant coursework; preferred additional education (associate degree or higher) and chemistry coursework, plus OSHA 30hr certification. Location: Albuquerque, NM (CNM) with travel as needed to support instructional needs. CNM emphasizes safety, compliance, and a collaborative, student-focused learning environment.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of thirty (30) hours of postsecondary coursework
- Minimum of nine (9) hours in the specific discipline with B or better
- At least 1 year of work experience in ceramics production or a studio environment
- Experience operating electric and gas kilns, and familiarity with Raku and pit firing
- Demonstrated proficiency with clay, glazes, slips, stains and ability to compound materials
- OSHA familiarity and ability to ensure PPE and ventilation compliance
- Ability to manage inventory, procurement, and studio budgets
- Ability to supervise work study and student employees
- Ability to instruct and guide students in equipment use and safety practices
- Demonstrated ability to assist faculty with demonstrations and lab setup
- Preferred: Associates degree or higher or enrolled in relevant degree program
- Preferred: chemistry coursework or willingness to enroll in CHEM 115
