Job Summary
Design, create, and implement high-quality FX simulations including fluids, smoke, fire, dust, explosions, and particle effects across shots and sequences. Develop and optimize FX setups and toolsets using Houdini and other industry-standard tools. Collaborate closely with artists, Leads, and Supervisors to solve complex visual and technical challenges. Maintain continuity across shots and ensure FX work meets creative, technical, and production requirements. Troubleshoot and debug FX setups while delivering clean and efficient scene files. Participate in reviews and incorporate feedback from Leads and Supervisors to refine and improve effects. Stay current with evolving FX techniques, workflows, and tools, implementing new approaches when appropriate. Work with upstream assets and integrate materials and other elements into Houdini. Optimize Houdini scenes and node graphs to maintain efficient and reliable workflows. Contribute to lighting and creative look development for FX elements when required. This is a remote-based role. Project-based and staff opportunities may be available, with extended health benefits and the opportunity to participate in RRSP programs.
Required Qualifications
- 3–5+ years of experience in the VFX or film production industry
- Intermediate to advanced experience with dynamics and simulations in Houdini
- Strong understanding of physical principles including fluid dynamics, particle behavior, collisions, and natural-world physics
- Experience with pyro, smoke, rigid body, destruction, and particle simulations
- Strong artistic sensibility combined with excellent technical and problem-solving skills
- Experience with shaders, lighting, and rendering as they relate to FX elements
- Experience ingesting upstream assets and applying materials in Houdini
- Experience with asset layout and scene and node graph optimization in Houdini
- A demo reel demonstrating strong FX work and an understanding of real-world physics
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with lighting and creative look development in Houdini
- Experience with Arnold
- Knowledge of VEX and/or Python
- A strong understanding of television/episodic VFX production pipelines, with feature film experience
