Area Manager, Science Center

Job Summary
Direct all aspects of facilities operations for the Science Center and 20 Garden Street, overseeing building systems, maintenance, custodial services, and mail operations across academic, laboratory, and public spaces. Manage an annual operating budget of $7M+, preparing forecasts, variance reports, and funding requests while identifying cost efficiencies. Lead staff, vendors, and contractors to ensure timely, cost-effective outcomes and high-quality service aligned with institutional standards. Coordinate capital projects, repair renewals, and renovations through scheduling, stakeholder communication, and contractor oversight. Monitor building automation systems for reliability, ensure compliance with safety regulations, and respond to emergencies and after-hours incidents. Collaborate with research faculty, departments, and campus security to support teaching, research, and operational continuity.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- 8+ years of progressive facilities management experience
- 12+ years of experience (equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Demonstrated experience managing complex building portfolios, systems and budgets
- Strong analytical, operational and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations governing high-hazard facilities
- Experience with relevant systems and tools (e.g., CMMS/work order systems, HVAC controls, security systems, Microsoft Office Suite)
- Proven leadership and staff management experience
- Ability to move throughout multiple buildings daily, including offices, laboratories, mechanical spaces, roofs, and stairways
- Ability to climb ladders and perform above-ceiling inspections
- Availability to respond to after-hours emergencies as required
- Must be able to perform all duties and responsibilities at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in higher education, research, or laboratory-intensive environments
- Professional certifications (e.g., CFM)
- BA/BS degree
