Job Summary
Archivist II – Digital Resources is responsible for the integrated management of born-digital archival material held by the Archives and Special Collections, including migration of legacy media to digital formats, development of digitization workflows, and use of digital preservation tools. The role serves as the local expert in digital preservation, disk-imaging, and asset management software, and supports reference services, donor relations, and acquisition of electronic records. Requires a graduate degree in Archival Studies or related field and at least three years of archival experience with born-digital material; knowledge of metadata standards (RAD, ISAD-G, Dublin Core, METS, PREMIS, etc.), OAIS, and tools like Archivematica, Bitcurator, and Python; strong planning, collaboration, and bilingual (French-English) capabilities. The position is based at the University of Ottawa Library, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate degree in Archival Studies, Library and Information Studies or a related field
- Minimum of three years working in an archival setting, including experience working with born-digital archival material
- Theoretical and practical knowledge and experience of archival activities including appraisal techniques, preservation, arrangement and description, and reference services
- Knowledge and experience in archival descriptive and metadata standards (RAD, ISAD-G, Dublin Core, METS, etc.)
- Familiarity with data structure standards (EAD, Dublin Core, MODS, METS, PREMIS)
- Knowledge of digital preservation standards such as OAIS and Trustworthy Digital Repositories
- Knowledge of computer storage media and file systems
- Experience with tools such as Bitcurator, Exactly, EPADD, Archivematica
- Ability to analyze documents to apply rules for acquisition, selection and access; knowledge of laws surrounding access and use of archives
- Knowledge of Linux and command-line interfaces; willingness to learn
- Familiarity with programming/scripting languages such as Python
- Ability to plan, work under pressure and organize work with minimal supervision
- Ability to develop and implement new methods; analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to collaborate within a team; seek information; evaluate options
- Bilingualism (French-English) in written and spoken forms
