Job Summary
Monitor ground-disturbing activities for the Secondary Border Barrier construction within Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, reviewing design plans and maintaining flexible scheduling aligned with contractor sequences. Conduct formal damage assessments for all natural and cultural resources, preparing detailed reports with photographic documentation, mapping, and GPS locations. Perform pedestrian surveys to identify undocumented resources, record features, and complete artifact identification and analysis. Assess known sites for erosion, vibration, and mechanical disturbance stressors. This role requires 10 years of archaeological fieldwork experience, proficiency with GIS and GPS, and physical stamina for hiking up to 5 miles daily in extreme Sonoran Desert heat while carrying 40 lbs of equipment.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 10 year(s) of experience in professional archaeological fieldwork
- Experience working with prehistoric and historic cultural resources typical of the Sonoran Desert region
- Familiarity with NAGPRA, NEPA/Section 106, ARPA, and tribal consultation processes
- Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards for Archaeology
- Proficiency with GPS units, GIS-based mapping, and standard archaeological field tools
- Strong technical writing skills for reporting and condition assessment documentation
- Experience required with Windows
- Experience required with MS Word
- Experience required with MS Excel
- Use of PPE required (hard hat, safety vest, eye protection, boots, etc.)
- Ability to safely navigate rugged Sonoran Desert terrain in high temperatures and remote conditions
- Ability to walk multiple miles per day
- Ability to work near heavy construction equipment
Desired Qualifications
- MA/MS Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or close related field preferred
- BA/BS acceptable with equivalent professional experience
