Archaeological Field Technician

Job Summary

Conduct field excavations including shovel tests, test unit excavations, and systematic artifact collection to identify and document cultural resources. Perform artifact processing by cleaning, cataloging, and preparing recovered materials in the laboratory for accurate analysis. Support artifact analysis through basic identification, sorting, and preliminary interpretation, while assisting with background research on environmental and historical data. Maintain accurate documentation of field observations, provenience information, and lab data to ensure data integrity. This temporary, as-needed role requires a High School diploma or GED, with a Bachelor's degree in anthropology or archaeology preferred. Candidates must be willing to travel extensively throughout the Southeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic and perform physical demands such as lifting 40-50 lbs in varying weather conditions.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma/GED
  • Valid employment eligibility (I-9)
  • Willingness to travel extensively throughout the Southeast, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to routinely lift and carry 40-50lbs
  • Ability to work outside of normal business hours
  • Ability to travel out-of-town and/or overnight as project needs arise
  • Strong communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a related field
  • Prior archaeological experience
  • Field school experience
