Job Summary
Provide interpretation services within the Department of Justice’s Linguistic Support Services, including court and deposition interpretation, translation, and transcription of sensitive legal materials across medical, scientific, financial, and technical domains. Handle diverse source materials and maintain confidentiality, delivering interpretation within 3 hours of request. Requires specialized training or substantial court/legal interpretation experience, ILR 3 or equivalent, and at least 4 years in language interpretation. Must be a U.S. citizen with familiarity of formal, legal language and CAT tools (SDL Trados Studio). Remote work possible across NCR and CONUS locations with some travel; confidentiality and ethics emphasized.
Required Qualifications
- Specialized training in the interpreting field and/or extensive experience in court or legal environments in the required language, able to provide interpretation within 3 hours of request
- Minimum of four (4) years of language interpretation experience in the required mode
- Qualifying scores ILR 3 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests
- Must have lived 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S.
- Must have at least 1 year of experience with a law enforcement and/or legal department
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Know English and foreign language vocabularies used in formal, legal, diplomatic, consultative, and casual contexts
- Know specialized vocabulary in both English and the foreign language related to Government missions
- Fluent in English and foreign language including regionalisms and slang
- Interpret in a manner that is accurate without changes, omissions, or additions
- Preserve tone and register of source materials
- Abide by relevant code of linguist ethics
- Proficient in using CAT tools, with emphasis on SDL Trados Studio
- Clearance: Active Public Trust or higher security clearance
- Location: Remote / National Capital Region / Various CONUS Locations
- Travel: Some travel may be required
