Job Summary
Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) for Mental Health Act assessments in hospital and community settings in Newport. This autonomous role carries statutory responsibilities under the Mental Health Act 1983, including decisions that may result in deprivation of liberty under Article 5, and requires acting independently on behalf of the Local Authority within multidisciplinary teams. Responsibilities include leading Mental Health Act assessments, making autonomous decisions on compulsory admissions, collaborating with senior health professionals, managing complex referrals and safeguarding cases, providing expert advice across services (Home Treatment Teams and Liaison Psychiatry), and supervising AMHP students and newly qualified professionals. Flexible hours are available beyond core hours when assessments require.
Required Qualifications
- Qualified Social Worker (Degree or equivalent e.g. DipSW)
- AMHP qualification and proven experience in the role
- Registered with the SCW or relevant professional body
- Strong understanding of mental health legislation, safeguarding procedures, and risk management
- Excellent communication and decision-making skills
- Ability to work flexibly, including outside core hours when assessments require
