Job Summary
Join Fessler & Bowman as a Heavy Equipment Operator Apprentice in Charlotte, NC. This structured apprenticeship offers hands-on training and classroom instruction to learn operating a variety of heavy construction equipment (including excavators, dozers, loaders, skid steers, rollers/compactors, motor graders, and off-road haul trucks) under supervision. You’ll perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, assist with excavation, grading, trenching, site preparation, and material handling, follow OSHA and safety policies, participate in safety meetings and apprenticeship-related programs, maintain training documentation, work with experienced operators to develop operating proficiency and jobsite awareness, and pursue opportunities for advancement into Equipment Operator, Lead Operator, Foreman, and Superintendent roles. Essential duties emphasize equipment operation support, site tasks, safety compliance, teamwork, training participation, and accurate documentation. Required qualifications include a high school diploma or GED preferred, age 18+, valid driver’s license, ability to work outdoors in varying weather, ability to lift up to 50 pounds, strong work ethic and eagerness to learn, and the ability to follow instructions in a team environment. Preferred experience in construction, equipment, agricultural, military, or related fields, plus basic understanding of site operations.
