Apprentice Lineman

Job Summary

Conduct construction, repair, and maintenance of power lines, transformers, and meters across various field locations. Assist linemen with underground cable installation, pole setting, traffic control, and equipment operation including line trucks and trenchers. Perform line patrols to report maintenance needs and ensure compliance with safety rules and regulations. Maintain transportation tools and equipment, adhering to strict on-call rotation requirements for service restoration. Work in all weather conditions with potential overtime during heavy workloads.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Completion of basic pole climbing
  • Graduation from vocational/technical school in power line studies
  • CPR and First Aid certification
  • Prior experience in basic technical utility knowledge
  • Valid Texas CDL (class A) license with a good driving record or ability to obtain it within 90 days
  • Ability to communicate in English, both in written and oral forms with the general public and co-workers
  • Ability to operate equipment including bucket trucks, digger trucks, and other related equipment
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or more, as necessary without external assistance of personnel or mechanical aids
  • Sight to see working conditions from a safety standpoint
  • Ability to effectively utilize a two-way radio to communicate duties and location
  • Ability to walk distances up to one mile in uneven terrain
  • Ability to perform manual digging with a pick and shovel
  • Ability to tie knots, rig blocks, and frame poles per specifications
  • Ability to climb poles of all types and perform required jobs while on poles
  • Skills and abilities to perform all required jobs with the installation of materials, apparatus, and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of electric distribution lines
  • Knowledge of RUS and REA line specifications
  • Knowledge of National Electric Code
  • Knowledge of National Electric Safety Code
  • Knowledge of OSHA Rules and Regulations
  • Willingness to work in all adverse and inclement weather conditions
  • Ability to serve on-call duty on a rotation basis

Desired Qualifications

  • Previous experience working with electrical systems and prior construction knowledge and abilities
  • Completion of an apprenticeship lineman program
  • Advanced lineman training/lineman certification
  • One to three years experience in electric utility distribution operations
  • Two to five years of experience
  • Five to ten years of experience in electric utility distribution operations, including distribution system construction and maintenance
