Job Summary
Provide special education services and IEP case management to secondary students with moderate to severe disabilities. Instruct students through lectures, demonstrations, and audiovisual aids while preparing course objectives and assigning lessons. Administer tests to evaluate progress, maintain attendance records, and keep accurate reports for parents. Manage classroom discipline, supervise students during transitions and after-school events, and differentiate instruction to support diverse learning needs. Meet with parents to discuss student progress and problems, participate in faculty meetings and training workshops, and perform related duties such as counseling students and sponsoring activities. Comply with school board policies and demonstrate professional growth.
Required Qualifications
- Valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area in which assigned
- Good health and no disqualifying physical or emotional handicaps
- Acceptable rating for teaching (for applicants with teaching experience)
- Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year accredited College or university
- Considered Highly Qualified
- Active Virginia Teaching License with appropriate endorsement in the area(s) for which they are teaching
- Command of Standard English, both spoken and written
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals
- Ability to write reports
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, parents, students, and the general public
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Ability to regularly stand
- Ability to occasionally walk, sit, reach with hands and arms
- Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Ability to talk and hear
- Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds
- Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
