Job Summary
Teach physical education and health classes covering fitness, rhythms, dance, and sports while instructing students in citizenship and state law. Develop lesson plans aligned with course and SOL standards, provide individualized instruction, and establish behavioral standards to maintain an orderly environment. Analyze and demonstrate formal sports skills, ensure equipment safety, and evaluate student growth in physical and social areas through report cards and records. Communicate with parents and counselors on progress, supervise out-of-class activities, and administer testing. Participate in staff development, student clubs, and parent activities to support the school community.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in education or a related field
- Virginia Department of Education licensure eligibility requirements to teach physical education
- Eligibility for, or possession of, an appropriate Virginia teaching license
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
- Manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer
- Ability to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids
- Ability to hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone
- Ability to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone
- Physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height
- Ability to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead
- Earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university and graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in health and physical education
- Earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university and completed a major in health and physical education
