Animal Technician I / Cage Washer

Job Summary
Disassemble and empty dirty cages, load and unload components into wash machines and sterilizers, and reassemble all cage parts. Disinfect animal-related supplies prior to use and perform general cleaning and preventative maintenance of cage wash machines and sterilizers. Maintain the cage wash area and perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor. This role requires lifting 50 pounds and pushing or pulling 300 pounds routinely while standing or walking for a full 7.5-hour shift in an environment with prolonged exposure to animals and dander. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including respiratory gear when necessary. A high school diploma is required, with excellent communication skills to interact with various university personnel. Weekend and holiday work may be required on a rotating schedule.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds and push/pull 300 pounds, routinely
- Must be able to walk or stand for a full 7.5-hour shift
- Must be able to perform in an environment with exposure to animals, animal dander, animal byproducts and bedding materials for prolonged periods of time
- Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including respiratory equipment (e.g. N95 mask or PAPR), if/when necessary
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Must be able to communicate effectively with and relate to various personnel throughout the University
- Must be available for weekend and holiday work on a rotating schedule
- Must be available for attendance during school closures (due to inclement weather and/or other emergencies)
- Must be able to work at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location
