Job Summary
Provide comprehensive veterinary medical care for shelter animals while overseeing preventative medicine, diagnostics, surgery, treatment protocols, disease prevention, and humane euthanasia. Serve as the medical authority for the shelter, guiding and training veterinary support staff to improve animal health outcomes and operational efficiency. Collaborate with leadership, volunteers, and rescue organizations to enhance adoption success and ensure compliance with the Association of Shelter Veterinarians Guidelines, Texas Veterinary Practice Act, and all applicable regulations. Requires a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with at least five years of experience, including shelter medicine or high-volume spay/neuter work, and proficiency with veterinary medical records software. Full-time position with a starting salary of $155,706 annually, offering medical, dental, vision, and retirement benefits.
Required Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or equivalent) from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine
- Current license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas
- Current DEA registration
- Valid Texas Class C Driver's license or higher and insurable under our auto policy
- Minimum of five (5) years of veterinary experience
- Extensive knowledge of shelter medicine principles and best practices
- Strong surgical and anesthesia skills
- Knowledge of infectious disease management and shelter biosecurity
- Working knowledge of current veterinary standards and practices
- Understanding of canine and feline behavior and humane animal handling techniques
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational and time management abilities
- Ability to make sound medical decisions in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, rescue organizations, and the public
- Commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality animal care
- Must pass background check and pre-employment substance abuse screening as a condition of employment
- A motor vehicle record check and job-related doctor's physical exam may also be required
- Must pass FBI Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) fingerprint-based criminal background check and maintain CJIS eligibility
Desired Qualifications
- Valid Texas Driver License (preferred)
- Shelter medicine or high-volume spay/neuter experience preferred
- Experience supervising or mentoring veterinary support staff preferred
- Proficiency with veterinary medical records software; experience with Chameleon software preferred
