Job Summary
Externship and volunteer program for law students to work with the Animal Legal Defense Fund, gaining exposure to animal law through research on aquatic animal law issues, dogs in breeding facilities and laboratories, and related regulatory/policy topics. Responsibilities include conducting legal, factual, regulatory, and policy research, general editing and cite-checking, collecting sources, preparing written materials (summaries, reports, presentations), and assisting with scholarly resources and presentations. Roles are unpaid, may offer academic credit or pro bono hours per law school requirements, and reports to the Senior Student Programs Attorney. Positions are fully remote from the United States with applications reviewed on a rolling basis; last day to apply is July 27, 2026. Applications require resume, cover letter, 2–3 references, law school transcript (unofficial okay), and an original writing sample. This is a U.S.-based externship/volunteer program offered by the Animal Legal Defense Fund.
Required Qualifications
- Law student status in good standing
- Interest in animal law
- Ability to conduct legal, factual, regulatory, and policy research
- Ability to edit and cite-check scholarly materials
- Ability to prepare written materials (summaries, reports, presentations)
- Willingness to work part-time (5-15 hours/week) as required by externship/volunteer requirements
