Job Summary
Patrol the city in a radio-equipped vehicle to enforce animal ordinances and ensure humane care. Answer complaints regarding animals, apprehend stray animals using tranquilizing equipment, and dispose of dead or injured animals. Lodge animals in the pound or veterinary hospital for observation, and destroy dangerous animals in the field while forwarding brain tissue for rabies testing. Inspect vaccination certificates and investigate complaints of abusive treatment or ordinance non-compliance. This role requires considerable knowledge of Mississippi State Law and local leash laws, along with the ability to analyze situations quickly and handle aggressive animals safely. Applicants must possess a valid Mississippi Driver's License, be a U.S. citizen and county elector, and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Required Qualifications
- Citizen of the United States
- Elect of the county in which he resides
- Considerable knowledge for the care and the handling of animals
- Knowledge of Mississippi State Law on animal welfare
- Knowledge of the leash-law within the municipality
- Knowledge of the City's Ordinance which regulate the keeping of small animals within the city limits
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to meet, talk and deal effectively with the public
- Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others
- Skills to read body signs of animals
- Skills to handle scared injured and aggressive animals
- High school graduate or acceptable equivalent
- Considerable experience in the control and care of animals
- Valid Mississippi Driver's License
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds
