Job Summary
Animal Control Officer 1 - On-Call/Casual, based in Port Alberni, BC for BC SPCA. Responsibilities include attending regular patrols and calls outside the Animal Centre, administering and educating on municipal by-laws and BC SPCA animal health/welfare protocols, transporting animals, operating and maintaining BC SPCA vehicles, and providing support to team members. Requires humane animal handling (low-stress, Fear Free practices), strong customer service and communication skills, conflict-resolution abilities, and the ability to train/mentor staff and volunteers. Must have Grade 12, Bylaw Level 1, 1-2 years related experience (or equivalent), a valid BC driver’s license, and be able to pass a Criminal Record Check; physical ability to lift/move heavy objects and work in a team-oriented environment.
Required Qualifications
- Grade 12 education
- completion of Bylaw Level 1
- 1-2 years’ related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Working hands-on with animals in veterinary/animal care settings
- Managing and diffusing conflict
- Record-keeping
- Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers’ License and driver’s abstract
- Physical ability to lift, pull, and push heavy objects and to handle aggressive animals
- Sound knowledge of animals, breeds, characteristics and common diseases
- Ability to work cooperatively as a team member
- Basic computer skills for front office routines
- Familiar with working in a union environment
- Criminal Record Check
