Animal Care Technician (ACT)

Job Summary

Provide humane care for all animals in the Society's care, including feeding, ensuring water availability, and performing euthanasia in accordance with policies and laws. Clean and disinfect all animal areas to maintain a safe and sanitary environment, while unloading, storing, and restocking department supplies. Dispose of deceased animals and perform light maintenance and janitorial duties. Assist in training new staff and volunteers, and provide support to other departments as assigned. Work a flexible schedule that includes weekends and holidays as needed, with designated start times for time-sensitive shelter operations.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • six months to one year related experience and/or training
  • equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
  • Ability to write simple correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to members of the public, volunteers, and other employees of the organization
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide
  • Ability to perform these operations using units, weight measurement, and volume
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations
  • Knowledge of Chameleon database software or become proficient within the probationary period (first six months from hire date)
  • Basic knowledge, or become proficient with Microsoft Office and computer keyboarding skills, and data entry
  • Must have a flexible schedule and the ability to work on weekends and/or holidays as needed
  • Valid California Driver's License with a clean record to be insured with PHS/SPCA insurance
  • The ability to manage the emotional aspect of end-of-life services and humane euthanasia, and support staff in high-emotion circumstances
  • Upon hire, must pass a background check
