Job Summary
Animal Care Specialist (Birds) at Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance, focusing on safe exhibition, handling, feeding, and husbandry of a diverse bird collection. The role emphasizes operant conditioning training to support a growing training program, guest engagement, and collaboration with education and other departments. Responsibilities include capturing, handling, and moving birds as needed, maintaining enclosures and life-support systems, recording data (daily/_logs), providing behind-the-scenes tours and keeper talks, assisting with educational programs, and participating in conservation and research initiatives. Qualified candidates will have a degree in Zoo Animal Technology, Biology, or a science-based field (or related animal behavior/psychology), zookeeper experience with exotic animals in an AZA-accredited institution, weekend/holiday availability, ability to lift up to 50 lbs, and the capacity to work across all facets of animal care and training, with strong teamwork and guest-interaction skills.
Required Qualifications
- Degree in Zoo Animal Technology, Biology, or a science-based field, or animal behavior/psychology required, or in a related field
- Zookeeper experience in the care, feeding, and handling of a variety of exotic animals in an AZA-accredited institution
- Ability, with proper training, to work in all aspects of animal care, husbandry, and training within the department in which the individual is assigned
- Work on weekends and holidays is required
- Operate a variety of light and medium equipment
- Clear driving record
- Ability to pass a physical examination, background check, and pre-employment drug and alcohol screen
- Negative TB Test
- Lift up to 50 lbs
