Animal Care Internship - Academic (Unpaid)

Job Summary

Prepare diets and feed animals, clean and maintain enclosures on exhibit and in back-of-house areas, and administer medications. Create and install naturalistic habitats, handle animals, and keep daily records of husbandry tasks and wellbeing. Research natural history and captive practices, then deliver 20-30 minute educational programs on species conservation and care. This three-month, unpaid internship requires a minimum of four weekly hours and involves occasional outdoor collection trips, wading, and lifting up to 60 pounds. Interns must independently complete assigned projects and coordinate academic requirements with their institution of higher education.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum weekly commitment is 4 hours
  • 3 month commitment
  • Must be seeking academic credit
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds
  • Must be willing to get wet and/or dirty
  • Must be capable of independently completing responsibilities listed in the previous section
  • Must be able to agree to internship requirements (projects, paperwork, contracts, evaluations) presented by ECHO Animal Care Staff during the internship interview

Desired Qualifications

  • Majors in animal science, wildlife biology, pre-vet, aquaculture, environmental science, or related fields
