Job Summary

Conduct daily animal care operations including examining, vaccinating, medicating, and administering flea prevention to all internal animals while completing necessary paperwork. Perform preliminary physical examinations under the Shelter Medical Team's direction and assist in behavior evaluations for dogs. Manage volunteer oversight, train new and current staff, and lead by example in achieving department goals. Open and close the shelter daily, ensuring all cages, hallways, and isolation areas are cleaned and disinfected. Feed, water, walk, and exercise all shelter animals while maintaining strict records and securing DEA-controlled substances. Assist with tours, lectures, and public education programs to promote animal welfare in the community.

Required Qualifications

  • Basic animal care knowledge of domestic animals including breeds, behavior, appropriate care and housing, common health problems, disease symptoms and handling techniques
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos
  • Basic computer skills using standard office programs such as Word or similar programs
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to customers, volunteers, and other employees of the organization
  • Valid California Driver's license with a clean driving record for at least one year before receiving an application
  • High school graduate or GED equivalent
  • One year related animal care experience in an animal shelter or veterinary hospital
  • Required to have a California State Euthanasia Certification or ability to obtain within six months of employment
  • Must stand, sit, walk, bend and stoop frequently to perform duties
  • Must have the ability to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds alone or up to 100 pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances
  • At times must chase or run after animals that have escaped confinement
  • Must be available and willing to work weekends, holidays, approved overtime, and attend mandatory training and meetings as the employer determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs

Desired Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in a related field is preferred
  • Relevant experience may be substituted for education
