Analysis Review Team Leader – NMR & UPLC-MS interpretation

$150,000–$180,000 year

On-siteMaryhill, Otago, New Zealand

Full Time

Job Summary

Plan and manage the shift rota to ensure consistent coverage across evenings and weekends, allocating day-to-day workload across the team. Act as the final escalation point for ambiguous or complex spectra, applying structure elucidation and NMR signal assignment expertise to resolve difficult cases. Run regular one-to-ones and performance reviews, identify training needs, and support each team member's development and progression. Own SOPs and quality procedures for the team's data review, leading timely investigation of flagged discrepancies or audit findings. Chair team meetings, represent the team in cross-functional discussions with the POM and OPS teams, and report on team performance and quality metrics to senior scientists and stakeholders. Work with the software team to identify and implement improvements to interpretation guidelines and workflows, contributing to the automation of analytical data processing.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in synthetic chemistry, or equivalent experience, with several years of industry experience in analytical or synthetic chemistry
  • Proven experience leading, supervising or mentoring a team, and/or significant industry experience that has prepared you for a first-line leadership role
  • Skilled in resolving challenging structure elucidation and NMR signal assignment problems — using 1D/2D NMR data (e.g. COSY, HSQC, HMBC, NOESY) alongside UPLC-MS to confidently assign structures to complex or ambiguous compounds
  • Working knowledge of LC/HPLC/UPLC data, including mass spectrometry and UV/Vis and/or ELSD detection
  • A solid understanding of organic chemistry, to make sense of the reactions under review and anticipate likely side products or impurities
  • Strong written and verbal communication, comfortable coaching junior team members and discussing complex outcomes with senior scientists and cross-functional teams
  • Able to work, and help manage, a rotating shift pattern that includes evenings and weekends

Desired Qualifications

  • Prior experience with MestreNova or similar NMR processing software
  • Experience contributing to automation or continuous-improvement initiatives in an analytical or laboratory setting
  • Exposure to formal quality systems or audits in a regulated environment
