Job Summary
Aircraft Mechanic I, Airframe, in support of U.S. Navy Aviation maintenance operations at NAS Oceana Virginia Beach, VA. Troubleshoots malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti-icing, pneudraulic, engines, auxiliary power unit, and ventilation and heating systems. Repairs, replaces, and rebuilds aircraft structures (wings, fuselage) and functional components (rigging, surface controls, plumbing, hydraulic units) using hand tools, power tools, and equipment such as rivet guns and welders. Interprets maintenance manuals, service bulletins, and technical data to determine repair methods. Performs inspections (progressive, phase, periodic, etc.), tests engine operation with specialized equipment, and verifies workmanship. May supervise jacking/towing, service engines and airframe components at line stations, and may require security clearances and CAC card. Safety, quality, and procedural compliance are emphasized; position may require travel to detachments and adherence to government background checks and residency requirements. The role requires US Citizenship for facility credentials and the ability to obtain a T3 Secret Eligible Status and appropriate licenses/credentials.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Completion of specialized courses in aircraft structural repair
- Minimum five years actual and recent organizational level F/A-18 aircraft maintenance experience with 3 years prior F/A-18 A-F Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) or Quality Assurance Representative experience
- 3 years F/A-18 A-F certified QA/SO experience
- Must meet the criteria to be qualified and certified as per OPNAVINST 8023
- Must meet the medical requirements for Explosive Handlers and Explosive Vehicle Operators contained in NAVMED P-117
- Must be able to obtain appropriate support equipment and/or material handling licensing upon initial unit assignment
- Must be able to obtain an approved status from the Contractor Verification system which includes a 7 year background check
- Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization
- Note: US Citizenship required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location
- Must be able to obtain a T3 Secret Eligible Status
