Job Summary
As the founding engineer for Benchling's Intelligence Engineering & Enablement team, you will own the technical direction, architecture, and delivery of the agentic AI portfolio. You’ll be a hands-on senior IC (partnering with an AI Product Manager and Data, Analytics & Systems peers) to architect enterprise-grade, production AI tooling and workflows, enable internal builders, drive security-conscious design, and lead the engineering effort through prototyping to hardened, governed systems with full SDLC rigor. Responsibilities include shaping architecture for multi-tenant agentic AI, building and shipping production components (CI/CD, testing, deployment), implementing robust security controls (encryption, access controls, audit logging, secrets management), enabling internal developers with developer experience tooling, and mentoring engineers while guiding hiring and handoffs to the platform.)
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience building production systems
- Hands-on experience building production systems that integrate with LLMs and/or agentic patterns: orchestration, tool use, memory and state management, evaluation, and observability
- Production experience with at least two of: Python, TypeScript/Node.js, Go
- Hands-on expertise with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic), agentic frameworks (LangChain, CrewAI), RAG over business content (Confluence, contracts, policies), vector databases (pgvector, Pinecone), workflow automation (n8n, Langflow), and LLM observability and evaluation tooling (LangSmith, Arize)
- Track record of going from zero to one: a platform, function, or product area built from scratch and scaled
- Experience operating in regulated or security-sensitive environments; grasp of encryption, access controls, audit logging, secrets management
- Comfortable exercising technical leadership independent of positional authority
- Build software with a product-first approach; ship code quickly with real-world impact
- Owner mindset and ability to own key platform pieces
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences
- Interest in learning more about life science
